I had the great pleasure of meeting, discussing and working with many people at the 14th UNCCD Conference of the Parties. Some of them participated for the first time in such an event.

One such person is Mrs. Kalyanee Shah, President of AO “Socio Economic Welfare Action for Women and Children” in Nepal. Namely, the representative of indigenous peoples, I proposed to present the position of civil society on soil health and population health in the Interactive Dialogue at the high level segment of the Conference (with the ministers of the participating countries), which we prepared together in the working group.

At first he refused and said he would not be able to present, and then being encouraged by 3 other representatives of different organizations in Nepal, but also by the other members of the Working Group, he accepted and presented with a rather harsh position from civil society.

Upon her return to her home country, she and her colleagues were invited as special guests at the UNDP-Climate Action for Young Nepalese in Kathmandu.

And from them I received a letter which I attach below.

Dear CSO friends,

Participation in COP 14 is our first experience of UNCCD activities. We got chance to learn how UNCCD is functioning and giving importance to CSO involvement.

Here we want to thank Jiajia, Bhawani, Natalia, Valentin, Jone, Amit, Yaya for their support and cooperation without which our active participation was not possible.

Our special thanks to Marcos who encouraged and help us to join UNCCD COP 14.

I had the great pleasure to discuss with many participants at the 14th UNCCD Conference of the Parties in India and to receive messages from them. One of them is Jannis, a young person from Germany who participated in both the Forum of the young people we organized with them and in one of the working groups we facilitated.

I was very impressed with the initiatives of the young people, but also their dedication. Below is the letter I received from Jannis. I am very pleased that we have been able to contribute something to support and promote their initiatives.

Dear CSO friends,

it was a pleasure to meet you all for integrating me since my first day at cop even though I am still only an 18-year-old high school student. I got to know many of you in the last days and would love to keep contact with you.

Yesterday night some friends of mine from the Youth Forum were joking about hosting and conference in Germany. But while overthinking the idea we found out that the idea wasn’t such unrealistic as we thought at first. So let’s see, if we can manage it. It would definitely be a pleasure to have some of you as speakers. If you are interested in supporting us in organizing the youth conference, I would be happy if you could text me. Furthermore I have my contact details in the following, to stay in touch. It was a pity that we couldn’t spend more time together and try to influence the policies together. Enjoy the remaining conference and please keep lobbying our position. I would appreciate to meet you all soon. Maybe in Chile.

Best, Jannis (Fridays for Future)
